A Tribute to Black Hair Part 2

BLACK HAIR: THE PRESENT

In the first portion of this 3 part series celebrating Black hair, I introduced you to the why behind this series and gave a nod to Black hair’s past. Let’s push to the present.

Currently Black hair is still both a problem and a passion for modern day America. Unfortunately still deemed “unprofessional” in many workplaces, ironically Black hair is considered the coolest in almost all entertainment settings, so much so that braids, the slick bun our mammas used to wear in the 90s (now appropriated to be called “the clean look” by white trendsetters), and other mainstay styles of the Black community are just now being popularized by the general public. Often imitated but never duplicated, the Black braid will always be the strongest symbol of Black hair’s beauty. Braids have long been both a meaningful and memorable way for the Black community not only to protect their hair but present their hair in any design they saw fit. Braids and Black hair go hand in hand and I love that.

Take a moment to enjoy this second part of my 3 part series celebrating Black hair. Allow the pearls to give you pause. Let the beautiful braid remind you of the winding paths enslaved Africans took by foot to freedom. Go ahead and be awestruck by each painstakingly placed pearl giving a nod to Black hair’s present. Black hair is beautiful.
