Pride & Prejudice & This Dress

It’s funny how one inspiration can spark another. I have always been a faithful fan of a good period piece in all of its forms. Maybe it’s the old soul in me, but I have always gravitated towards films and fables of Olden-day fantasy. Classics like Little House on the Prairie, Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, and TV shows like Versailles and Downton Abbey (all of which I highly recommend watching and/or reading) speak to me in a way that until recently I didn’t understand. Besides the obvious rich rhetoric, drama, and cinematography that seems to come standard with this genre, there is also a major element that makes it all majestic… the fashion.

How could I have not noticed this before? Ruffles, frills, high neck collars,…bows. These were all of the naturally normal elements of attire for the period pieces I adored and in some way saw myself moving through modern-day life. My list of favorite period pieces is too long to relay, but my all-time favorite book and film is none other than the Jane Austen behemoth, “Pride and Prejudice”. (I know…you clutched your imaginary pearls in agreement.)

By this point you’re wondering how “one inspiration can spark another” plays into period pieces. Stay with me. It has been my desire to purchase a copy of “Pride and Prejudice” for my personal library but not just any copy. I wanted something just as beautiful as the story itself. Serendipitously Barnes & Noble had recently released their version of the noteworthy novel with a cover that had me adding to cart in an instant. Perusing the pages I found myself being inspired by the cover and unconscioulsy sought out a dress worthy enough to compliment this timeless tale. The end result was a happy Shayla escaping to the Olden days and looking the part.
