I’ll get straight to the point. Sika is incredible. Founded in 2005, this “made in Africa” brand has some of the most beautiful fabrics and silhouettes I have seen in a while. Often returning to the brand’s website, I would create my ideal closet in my mind, spilling with African prints and full of cultured color. At the time, owning a Sika garment was financially out of reach and so dreaming would have to do.

Fast forward to the present day, and after the 2020 “awakening” in the fashion industry to the major disparity of exposure to Black-owned brands, Sika was added to Nordstrom and Anthropologie and I was elated.

My first Sika piece had me at yellow. The breathable cotton fabric, the ruffle details, the banded waist…the side pockets! I was sold and as soon as I saw myself in this silhouette I felt a touch closer to my roots. Maybe you have yet to purchase an item from a Black-owned brand. Maybe you have been wanting to purchase from a Black-owned brand but don’t know where to begin. Maybe you weren’t aware of the lack of exposure of Black-owned brands in the mainstream fashion market prior to this post. Whatever your “maybe” is I think maybe it’s time for a Sika piece.
